Modeling of structure change during a coal pyrolysis

A structure change of a molten coal during a pyrolysis may be related to the formation and consumption behavior of intermediate species such as a metaplast. According to difference in metaplast and structure evolution, there are different char structures: dense structure, foam structure, and hollow structure [1]. The final char structure will depend on many factors including coal properties such as a maceral content, heating rate and temperature, atmospheric pressure, etc.
In this preliminary effort, we developed relatively simple reaction and transport model to predict the behaviors of plasticity and subsequent structure change in the coal under fast heating condition. The parameters predicted from this model calculation were a temporal variation of metaplast concentration, viscosity and coal diameter. These values were compared with other experimental and numerical results previously published in the literature.
