The development of alternative energy resources has to be needed in the world because of the depletion of fossil fuels, such as petroleum oil, natural gas and coal, and increasing concern about global warming. Especially biomass resources might be recognized as a promising way to solve both problems. Therefore many countries have tried to develop biomass resources. However, there is not enough information about biomass energy potential in Korea. In this study, the energy potential and energy densities of domestic biomass resources was analyzed by using Korean biomass resource map. Agricultural biomass wastes, forestry biomass, livestock wastes, and municipal solid wastes in Korea were analyzed and the total energy potential of major cities were calculated. The results from the evaluation of biomass energy potential and energy densities in Korea might be useful to estimate the availability of biomass energy conversion processes and to choice a appropriate process to convert domestic biomass resources into energy.
