(75c) Lanzatech Projects and Technology for Advanced Biofuels and Chemical Co-Products

LanzaTech has developed a gas fermentation technology that utilizes gas streams containing sustainable sources of CO, H2, and CO2.  These gas streams can be created from conversion of residual biomass, municipal solid waste, or biogas to synthesis gas.  The technology can also make use of existing waste andresidual gas streams from industrial sources, gas streams that are often flared.   Because H2/CO composition shifting is not required, and the process is robust to feed contaminants, minimal gas cleaning and conditioning is required, an advantage over conventional thermochemical processes. LanzaTech can convert such gas streams into ethanol and 23-butanediol, a C4 dialcohol that can then be converted into conventional chemicals such as MEK and butadiene, as well as drop-in biofuels.  This enables the implementation of a sustainable biorefinery, in which carbon from a wide variety of residues can be re-used in the form of  biofuels as well aschemical co-products.
