This work aims to encourage the use of the Case Discussion Method in courses of Chemical Engineering, presenting an example used in the classroom which requires multiple and several applications of principles of chemical sciences and engineering. We aim to emphasize that the discussion of actual cases of Chemical Engineering in the classroom with an appropriate methodology, facilitates the fulfillment of the learning objectives to be obtained with students, such as the development of problem solving skills, communication skills and ethical, social and environmental awareness
We present our experience in using the Case Discussion Method to teach principles of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences in Chemical Engineering courses. Also, we encourage the use of this method of learning in the areas of basic and engineering sciences, as it is not widely used in these fields of knowledge, because, due to the method approach, this has not been used significantly for the study of the subjects of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Engineering. However, this method is very well accepted in other areas such as Management, Law, Medicine and Finance.
We start by presenting the educational intentions that led us to use the case method, and then we present the case used, objectives, content and methodology used in the courses as well as the results of the progress and learning achieved by the students of Chemical Engineering in our Institution.
