One of the principal tasks of the chemical engineer is to develop or modify processes minimizing material, energy consumption and cost. The energy balances course is taught in the 5th semester of the Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering of the  Facultad de Ciencias Químicas of Autonoma de Nuevo León Universty (UANL), México. In this course, the students must do final projects where the knowledge acquired are applied in a practical case. This project represents 10% of your semester final rating. One of these projects was performing an energy audit to the laboratory of materials I.  Measurements were made such as: indoor temperature, outdoor temperature, time of use of appliances and conditioners air, conditioner air and appliance setting temperature, weather, number of persons, month of year, laboratory location and size, , construction material laboratory, number of devices, energy in the form of heat radiated by appliances, heat convection (flows of air between the interior and the exterior). The energy used in the laboratory of materials I in the form of heat that enters through Windows exposed to the Sun all day, the power consumption of devices used during the period of measurements is 11,732,508.6 KJ. In this project, the students understanding the importance of using the energy and its environmental impact.  The students proposed to improve the energy use in the laboratory via the installation of efficient lighting control systems and fluorescent lamps (32W), the insulation of windows, the use of light colors on the walls and ceiling and to avoid dark windows, the application of periodic servicing and maintenance to the equipments.
