(296c) The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam Converts to Computer Base Testing (CBT) and the Impact of the FE-CBT As an ABET Assessment Tool

Traditionally, the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam involved an 8 hour test using pen and paper.  In January of 2014 the pen and paper examination process was terminated and converted to computer base testing (CBT) exam.  Historically, this exam has been used as part of the academic ABET assessment process, being one of the only direct measure of a student mastery of engineer skills.   While the FE exam still serves as an excellent assessment tool, the chemical engineering academic community must be informed of the exam changes in order to take full advantage of the FE as an assessment tool. 

This presentation will present the new CBT examination process for the FE.  In addition, the presentation will present the impacts of these changes on the usefulness of the FE, CBT as and assessment tool, from the prospective of an educator attempting to use the FE-CBT for assessment, a National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) examination preparer, and an ABET- Program Evaluator (PEV).
