Bhown, A. S. - Presenter, Electric Power Research Institute

Fossil-powered plants are the largest point-source of CO2 emissions and account for about 40% of all CO2 emissions in the United States. For the past several years, The Electric Power Research Institute has critically assessed the status of CO2 capture technologies being developed globally for post-combustion flue gas generated from such power plants. Over 130 technologies have been assessed, with a critical focus on the underlying principle of the technology, the energy consumed for the process, its potential for wide applicability, and potential need for EPRI involvement. Technologies included absorbents, adsorbents, membranes, mineralization, cryogenic, and other approaches, and spanned early-stage concepts to pilot-scale demonstrations.  Summary results from this effort will be presented along with challenges of CO2 capture, capture requirements, general status of technologies, and overall development trends.
