(132b) Sustainability in Engineering

Sustainability concepts are prevalent and frequently used throughout engineering, often providing the impetus for new designs and technological advancement. Sustainability and its implementation are increasingly important in the marketplace, in our society, and throughout everyday activities. This presentation explores some of the key concepts within sustainable engineering, such as the appropriate use of life cycle methods to quantify the impacts of a proposed product or process.  As an example, the concepts of sustainability are applied to the use of additive manufacturing, and the importance of chemical engineering analysis in the design of products based on this new technology are discussed.
