The interaction of fuel drops and the piston surface is a significant issue in combustion engines. Drop/wall interaction has a determining effect on mixture distribution and engine combustion performance. It is challenging to predict accurately the detailed outcomes of drop/wall interactions. In this work, an improved smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method was used to study drop/wall interactions. SPH is a Lagrangian, mesh-free particle method. The SPH method has advantages in simulating large deformation of liquid drops impinging on solid surfaces. The improved SPH method was able to predict many details of drop/wall interactions, including spread, splash, and breakup. The numerical results were compared with experiments from literatures with good levels of agreement.
