Although biomass gasification is a proven technology; produced syngas contains mixture of tarry compounds and particles, which must be removed before being using syngas for electric power or fuels and chemicals production. Biomass-generated syngas tar consists of mixture of organic hydrocarbons, which cause problems in the process equipment, engines and turbines used downstream from gasification. In this research, we have developed and evaluated a novel biomass-based filter system for syngas cleaning. Biomass-derived material is made to have specific particle sizes which are used as the filter medium, and a gasifier was used to generate syngas. The filter system that consists of sections, has a known (experimentally established) flow rate and velocity through the filter. The tar removal efficiency of filter system was assessed at two syngas inlet temperatures of 150°C and 300°C. This presentation will show the result of the syngas tar removal system.
