Human surrogates for drug testing could reduce the cost of drug development by eliminating ineffective or toxic drugs earlier in the drug development cycle. Such surrogates can be created using tissue engineered constructs to represent key organs in a physical microscale model based on physiologically based pharmaceutic models (PBPK). We will describe our “pumpless” surrogate system and preliminary data using multiorgan models. We also will describe progress toward construction and operation of a 10+ organ human model.
