Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is a promising approach to efficient use of energy and lost-cost capture of CO2. In this study, a packed bad reactor was adopted to perform CLC tests on produced gas from coal pyrolysis. Al2O3 and coal fly ash were tested as the supports of an iron based oxygen carrier (OC) for both the combustion of coal pyrolysis gas and the production of hydrogen. The effects of different experimental parameters such as temperature, iron impregnate ratio, reactivity and duration of OC were investigated. Coal ash could be a cost-effective support for the OC used in this research.
