NCC represents a new generation of renewable nano-biomaterials with unique physical, chemical and optical properties with vast potential applications. The unique properties of NCC have afforded its promising applications in many industrial sectors. However despite significant advances toward large scale production of nanocrystalline cellulose from forest biomass, there has been little success toward identifying a marketable product justifying the manufacture cost of NCC. In the presentation, we will discuss recent work on functionalization of nanocrystalline cellulose for potential high value applications.
