(585b) Pilot-Scale Filter Testing of a Process to Treat Radioactive Liquid Waste

The Savannah River Site is developing processes to treat radioactive liquid waste. One of these processes is the actinide removal process. This process adds monosodium titanate (MST) to the waste to sorb strontium and select actinides. The MST and entrained sludge (i.e., insoluble metal oxides) are removed from the waste by a crossflow filter. Since start up, filter fouling has limited the throughput of the process.
The authors constructed a pilot-scale crossflow filtration apparatus to perform tests to understand the causes of the filter fouling and to improve the filter flux. This presentation will discuss the construction of the pilot-scale filter and the filter testing results.
