(6cu) Carbon Capture and Sequestration Technology for Greenhouse Gas Mitigation

‘Global warming, Green House Gas emissions, Climate Change’ are those terms which are being familiar to every individual on earth since past few decades. Very few were unaware about the three keys of Green House Gas emissions one among them is carbon-dioxide. The relative global contribution of carbon-dioxide in climate change is roughly estimated more than 55% since late 20th century. It is necessary to reduce the carbon-dioxide emissions before it too long. Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is a range of technologies that hold the promise of trapping up to 90% of the carbon-dioxide. CCS involves capturing, transporting and burying the carbon-dioxide so that it does not accumulate in the atmosphere and contribute to climate change. The most sensible approach of capturing carbon-dioxide is from large stationary sources, such as fossil fuel power plants. In this technique the challenge is to capture carbon-dioxide at low cost and continuously isolate it securely over long term. In this paper the investigation of capture economics of the three main capture techniques (Pre combustion capture, post combustion capture and oxyfuel) were done. Also the need of CCS and the utilization of captured carbon-dioxide other than putting it in an underground storage (e.g. enhanced oil recovery) too thoroughly studied. After successfully completing the study we come on conclusion that CCS involves the responsible utilization of fossil fuels without endangering the planet. We found that the CCS technology is garnering attention as a bridging technology in the new energy society.
