In Germany, the increasing share of unsteady renewable energy generation in the total energy supply makes storage options necessary. One option is to use hydrogen, however not in its pure form but rather stored by chemical reaction in a carrier. The transport and distribution of energy is thus the transport of a liquid, a logistical network that already exists for heating oil or car fuel. There is consequently no need to build a completely new  infrastructure.

The lecture describes the present technical readiness level of 6 of this technology and its applications and challenges in stationary or mobile energy storage. This state is contrasted to battery storage.
