Future conversion schemes for the transformation of feedstocks to chemicals and fuels will rely on the use of novel heterogeneous catalysts. As the need for process intensification continues to drive operation towards demanding environment conditions (temperature, pressure, pH) catalyst stability will become a key attribute for process catalysts. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) has emerged as a nanostructuring toolbox for the modification of surface properties with atomic precision. Examples are support modification, single- and multi-component nanoparticle decoration and ultrathin-film overcoats via ALD to effectively synthesize and stabilize catalysts. We will discuss how these ALD processes can be applied is suitable reactor configurations, but for batchwise (fluidized bed) and continuous (pneumatic reactor) production.
