(234g) Characterization and Management of Some Oil Fields Produced Water of Upper Assam Basin

Several toxic elements are present in oil field produced water (PW). This paper tries to characterize the physical and chemical parameters of PW with an aim to manage the huge quantity of oil field PW. The oil fields of Upper Assam Basin have been producing with high water cut sometimes even exceeding 90%.  The PW discharge large volumes of liquid waste containing several toxic elements adversely affect both biotic and aquatic life forms. These wastes need to be treated because of the presence of several harmful constituents. These PW are complex mixture of organic and inorganic compounds. We directly can’t dispose it to the environment without proper treatment of these liquid wastes. PW discharges into the environment have made PW management a significant part of the industries. Several developing countries like India are facing the problem of fresh water scarcity. Proper management, treatment and reuse of the PW for the beneficial purpose of the mankind and environment can mitigate the scarcity of fresh water. This paper attempts to describe about characteristics of PW, their pollutant profile, and management option to mitigate the adverse environmental impacts. Also tries to describe the isotopes, major and minor elements presents in PW.
