Our work addresses an important question in nanoscale assembly: how to create arbitrarily designed nanoparticle-based structures using self-assembly? In this work we demonstrate a novel broadly applicable strategy for assembly of designed nanoparticle architectures by co-assembly of disimilar nanoparticles/DNA modules. Such modules integrate nanoparticles with DNA frames that provide diverse selective and anisotropic bonds. By adding various topological types of those nanoparticle modules and by controlling their stoichometry in the hetero-mixture we direct assembly process towards the desired architectures. We show that planar, both periodic and arbitrarily prescribed, nanoparticle assemblies can be generated on-demand.
