Green Chemical Reaction Engineering for Sustainability
Sunday, November 13, 2016 - 3:50pm to 4:10pm
International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (IFF) is a leading global creator of flavors and fragrances for a wide variety of consumer products. Green chemistry and sustainability has long been an embedded part of molecule discovery and manufacturing processes at IFF. Example processes illustrate how green engineering technologies involving micro/flow reactors and heterogeneous catalysts are used to enhance both sustainability and economics of existing manufacturing processes for fragrance ingredients. Micro/flow reactors are significantly more energy efficient than conventional batch reactors. Their enhanced heat and mass transfer rates suppress unwanted side reactions, leading to high conversion, low waste and increased safety. These reactors combined with novel heterogenous catalysts provide greener and friendlier alternatives to many synthetic chemical processes that use conventional toxic, corrosive, hazardous reactants and catalysts.
