(145e) Safety Considerations When Designing a New Chemical Engineering Research Laboratory

Authors

The University of Kansas recently completed an expansion project for the School of Engineering. The new building added interactive classrooms as well as state-of-the-art research facilities. This presentation provides an example of the safety considerations implemented in the design and construction of our research laboratory in the new building. Safety procedures and equipment which are common in industry have been included in the design and function of the new laboratory. A variety of safety systems will be reviewed including ventilated enclosures, gas handling systems, air monitoring, interlock systems, uninterruptable power and personnel protective equipment. Process safety management procedures will also be highlighted and reviewed.
