Smart manufacturing provides a revolutionary ways for the next generation of production in the chemical manufacturing industries. One of the unique advantages of smart manufacturing is the creation of a knowledge base to reduce the operating and capital costs of chemical processes. The Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition (SMLC) has collectively developed and is pursuing a comprehensive technology and business roadmap to develop and implement Smart Manufacturing capabilities that will enable next-generation economic, energy, sustainability and EH&S manufacturing performance and competitiveness. (SMLC, 2011). We viewed Corning’s concept of smart manufacturing as a combination of multiple capabilities (integrating measurements, controls, computing platforms, modeling and analytics) to improve process/product development, manufacturing performance, and reduce manufacturing cost within a plant and across the supply chain as very encompassing. (Michelle Pastel, Corning 2016). The challenges and management considerations in smart manufacturing will be presented.
