A microbial consortium is two or more microbial groups living symbiotically. It is a group of different types of bacteria that summatively act as a unit, with each bacteria contributing to the function of the consortium. The study and engineer of microbial consortium are critical to understand microbiome, environmental bioremediation and complex biochemical processes to produce biofuels or other important chemicals. In this presentation, we are going to highlight our recent progress to create and design a novel function multi-species microbial consortium. Exogenous enzymatic reactions will be engineered into the consortium. Efficiency, stability and evolvement of the consortium will be characterized. The ability to engineer robust multi-species communities would enable modulation of microbe consortium for human health, industrial and environmental applications.
