Sustainability is now showing up as one of the top challenges for the survival of human being that catches the attention of governments, industry, and academy. Green process engineering (GPE) is a useful tool and important research field that could make significant contributions in making wasteful and hazardous processes more green and sustainable for the benefit of the environment, economy, and society. Ionic liquids (ILs), as a kind of novel media for green chemistry and chemical engineering, have been studied extensively as green solvents, catalysts, and electrolytes due to their unique properties and high potentials. This talk will present recent case studies on the structure-property relationship, the formation and regulation rules of ionic clusters, mechanism of synergistic catalytic effect, as well as the methodology of IL-based process design and a couple of innovative green process technologies based on ILs. The talk concludes with open challenges in the fundamental researches and applications of ionic liquids.
