As the biggest Urea fertilizer manufacturer in Indonesia, Pupuk Kaltim currently has production capacity of 3,43 million tons per year Urea, 2,74 million tons per year Ammonia, and 350 thousand tons per year NPK. PKT-3 is one of the Ammonia and Urea plant of Pupuk Kaltim with licensing process from Haldor Topsoe for Ammonia plant and Stamicarbon for Urea plant. The production capacity of PKT-3 is 1,000 tons per day Ammonia and 1,725 tons per day Urea.

At February – March 2015, PKT-3 changed its Ammonia Converter from S-200 type to S-300 type after 26 years of operation. The improvement was expected to give greater production with less energy consumption. It was expected to reach 1,100 tons per day of Ammonia production with lower energy consumption.

The comparison of operation data before and after the improvement shows that the increase of production is gained from higher conversion in Ammonia Converter. The energy consumption decrease as the result of lower synthesis loop pressure thus decrease the import steam. The increase of conversion also decrease the ratio of process fuel and result less energy consumption for Ammonia plant.
