Scanning probe microscopy with functionalized tips has become a powerful analytical method to study a wide range of chemical compounds at the single molecule level. In this talk, I will introduce this novel approach and review recent developments in the field. To this end several studies are discussed where high-resolution scanning probe microscopy has been successfully applied to analyze structural and electronic properties of synthetic model compounds, products formed by on-surface synthesis or atomic manipulation, purified natural samples or complex mixtures.
