Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) layered nanosheets on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrate were prepared as a platinum (Pt)-free counter electrode (CE) for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). It was found that the DSSC with 1T phase MoS2 as counter electrode exhibited a much higher efficiency than that with 2H phase MoS2 as counter electrode. The excellent electrocatalytic activity of the 1T phase MoS2 counter electrode was further demonstrated by cyclic voltammograms, in which the 1T phase MoS2 showed higher peak current density and lower peak-to-peak separation positions than 2H phase MoS2.
