Fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) slurry oil is regarded as an ideal soft component for asphalt blending process due to its low cost and high content of aromatics. However, the bad ageing resistance limits its application to only low-grade paving asphalt production. A new process has been proposed where propanal is used as the highly active slurry oil modifier with small molecular structure and low molecular weight. With the aid of the modifier, the active groups in the slurry oil are deactivated and the ageing resistance of FCC slurry oil is improved.

The FCC slurry oil has been modified with modifier in a batch reactor according to the defined mass ratio and the modified slurry oil has been characterized by FT-IR, NMR and kinematic viscosity. The main conditions in the slurry oil modification process have been investigated, including the reaction temperature, pressure, time, modifier contents and other factors. The results demonstrated the occurrence of the electrophilic substitution reaction during the modification. When reaction temperature was 180℃, reaction pressure was 2.0 MPa, the reaction time was 5h, and the modifier contents was 3.0(wt%), the kinematic viscosity of modified slurry decreased from 129.21 mm2/s to 64.51 mm2/s, and the penetration ratio of the modified slurry blended asphalt increased from 53.9 to 65.3. The asphalt using modified slurry oil as soft component can be achieved to meet standard requirements of 70# paving asphalt. FCC slurry oil modification technology provides a new method for both SDA and asphalt process economically.
