Functional materials are highly desired for a wide range of applications. Biological agents are particulary appealing since they offer high specificity and a great variety of functionality. The presentation reviews our recent efforts in designing and producing functional biological agents for fabrication of materials. We showed that pH and enzyme acivity-responding coatings on porous nanoparticles could afford efficient controlled drug release, while single chain antibodies could enable cell recognition on drug-loaded nanoparticles. We further showed that materials such as plastics and cotton fabrics can be efficiently modified by application of hydrophobin proteins, or cellulose binding domains
