The advancement in continuous manufacturing, process monitoring, and control systems has accelerated the progress towards smart manufacturing in the pharmaceutical industry. Smart manufacturing necessitates reliable and accurate measurements from field devices combined with good quality estimates of unmeasured process variables. Further, effective real-time communication between equipment and sensors is critical. Thus, the sensor network which comprises of equipment measurements, field devices, PAT tools, process models, DCS and SCADA systems, and data analytics is a fundamental requirement for robust process operations.

In this poster, we discuss the components of an effective sensor network for such a process. The challenges arising from an integrated system comprising of multiple unit operations, the measurement technologies and tools for systems integration are presented. A case study on a continuous roller compaction system is utilized to highlight the integrated system, along with demonstrating the application of data reconciliation for ensuring data accuracy. Finally, the concept of quality-by-control is demonstrated as the integrated platform to advance smart manufacturing in pharmaceutical systems.
