A fluidized-bed crystallizer is continuously operated with a specified crystal-size distribution. Under selected experimental conditions of temperature-dependent supersaturation and varied flow conditions the crystal size distribution changes dominantly by agglomeration. A flow-through microscope QICPIC is used to measure and quantify the changes in shape, size and agglomeration over time.

Corresponding model calculations for the fluid flow as well as for the crystal size and shape changes are used to deepen our understanding of the important process phenomena and the influencing process parameters.

The application of the fluidized-bed crystallizer in bigger process scheme of a continuous production of specified crystals will be the prospect of the presented work.
