(225b) Incorporating Teaching Methods from the ASEE Summer School during My First Year on the Job

I attended the ASEE Chemical Engineering Summer School before my first semester as faculty at the University of Texas at Austin. In Fall 2017, I taught Chemical Reactor Design and Analysis to a class of 70 students. Several methods from the summer school were incorporated into my teaching, including the use of “notes with gaps.” Based on course survey data, 74% of students strongly agreed that the course materials were helpful to them, compared to 43% of students from previous semesters. In Spring 2018, I taught the same course again to a class of 80 students. During this semester, I have also incorporated more interaction into my lectures by using conceptual questions from LearnChemE and the AIChE Concept Warehouse. During the middle of lecture, students are given a chance to discuss the questions before being polled for their answers. In this talk, student feedback from both the Fall 2017 and Fall 2018 semesters will be discussed.
