In this work, Al/Zr pillared bentonite clay catalysts washcoated onto cordierite monoliths have been prepared, characterized and tested for phenol oxidation in aqueous medium. The physico-chemical characteristics were investigated through SEM, p-XRD, BET-surface area, zetasizer and ultrasonic adherence tests. The obtained Al/Zr pillared bentonite clay/cordierite monolithic catalysts were compact and 35% (by mass) loading of Al/Zr pillared bentonite clay was achieved after three immersion time. The surface area of Al/Zr pillared bentonite clay/cordierite monolithic catalysts increases greatly as powder Al/Zr pillared bentonite clay loading increases due to higher surface area of starting pillared clay. It is been proved that adhesion depends primarily on the particle size of the deposited Al/Zr pillared powder. The catalytic activity of the monolith catalysts were evaluated in the catalytic wet air oxidation of phenol, showing excellent results.
