Cybersecurity, particularly in the Industrial Control System (ICS) discipline, is hardly a rare topic these days. There are endless discussions of IT/OT convergence, cybersecurity frameworks, IIoT, the growth of Advanced Persistent Threats, and myriad similar topics. However, there are essential differences between the traditional IT approach to cybersecurity and the paradigm that exists in an ICS environment that create unique challenges and provide likewise unique opportunities. This keynote will highlight some of the less obvious aspects of defending these environments and engage the audience to think, perhaps, a little differently. The talk will cover the organizational capability, governance, and philosophical distinctions encountered in real-world cybersecurity deployments and some of the lessons learned by major Oil, Gas, and Chemical producers. Additionally, this session will consider some of the disruptive technologies that have emerged as a result of the rapid expansion of the ICS cybersecurity market. This particular landscape is in rapid transition and it is important to understand some of the esoteric approaches necessary for successful cybersecurity development early in the journey.
