Analytical and numerical simulation models have been developed which enable one to critically examine gravimetric uptake measurements performed using a Payne cell. The discussion will focus on the measurement of solvent transmission rates through polymer membranes and the evaluation of permeation, diffusion and solubility (P*, D and S) coefficients from unsteady state mass transfer experiments. The data measured using the Payne cell method will be compared to diffusion and isotherm data measured by traditional experiments. Benefits and limitations of the Payne cell method will be discussed.
