As a new solvent, the unique structures and properties of ionic liquids make them show significant advantages in the separation fields. That offers new opportunities for new separation technology development. Previously, we have done some interesting work for understanding the fundamental nature of ILs and developing new gas separation process. New task-specific ILs were designed and synthesized by modifying the structure of the anion and cation of the ILs. These task-specific ILs were used for CO2 capture from flue gas, amonia separation from tail gas of ammonium molybdate process and so on, which showed obviously higher solubility and selectivity. The large-scale preparation process of task-specific ILs was established, and the qualified absorbent was prepared by using industrial raw materials.

The continuous experiments were all completed to evaluate the absorbent performance by using gas separation unit (10Nm3/h). The optimum operating parameters of the process were obtained. Process simulation was also developed to optimize the gas seperation performance using pure ILs (Used for NH3 separation) and ILs mixture (Used for CO2 capture). The results showed that ILs process saved heat energy consumption and separation cost compared to the traditional process. At present, we have completed the engineering design. The demonstration plant is under construction by cooperating with company.
