We have developed an ultrasensitive method for the quantification of metal ions using attenuated total reflectance surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS). The detection limit of metal ions is as low as 10 ppq, which is two orders of magnitude lower than that of currently used ICP-MS/electrochemical methods and thus provides a more sensitive approach to understanding of the structure-stability relationships of catalysts at atomic level.
