Abstract: 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), deriving from lignocellulose, is a building block compound in the synthesis of many value-added chemicals. We have previously developed a p-Hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid-formaldehyde copolymerized resin solid acid (SPFR) through a succinct hydrothermal method. The SPFR exhibited a certain activity for carbohydrates dehydration. And it owned several advantages, such as strong acid strength and relatively low cost. In current study, a modified SPFR (Al-SPFR) was prepared by introducing aluminum into the framework of the catalyst. SEM, TEM, FT-IR, element analysis and N2 adsorptipn-desorption technologies were applied to characterize the modified SPFR. Aluminum introduction has increased markedly the specific surface area of the catalyst. Compared with the SPFR, the Al-SPFR showed an improved activity for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural production from glucose, and the recyclability of the Al-SPFR was reasonable.
