The Department of Energy’s Carbon Capture and Carbon Utilization program, administered by the Office of Fossil Energy and implemented at the National Energy Technology Laboratory, is conducting research and development activities on advanced carbon capture and utilization technologies to advance safe, cost effective, capture and storage and/or use of CO2. This talk will provide an introduction to the portfolio’s capture projects which aim to provide step-change reductions in both cost and energy penalty as compared to currently available technologies for the potential carbon dioxide feedstock for renewable and synthetic fuels production. In addition, the carbon utilization program will review projects producing end-use renewable fuels and precursors such as CO. These projects are implementing novel conversion pathways and approaches via diversifying energy sources, developing new catalysts, integrating system process designs, and more.
