De Pablo, J. - Presenter, University of Wisconsin-Madison
The National Laboratories represent complex organizations that conduct forefront research, and that house some of the most advanced technological instruments available to the scientific community. In this presentation, I will present a brief overview of Argonne National Laboratory and of Fermilab, and how industry and academia interact with these institutions to pursue large multidisciplinary projects involving large teams of scientists and engineers. Importantly, the success of these projects depends on robust management structures that have evolved over the years to enable and facilitate scientific research. I will describe some of these structures, along with some of their advantages and limitations.
