5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), an versatile platform chemical derived from carbohydrates is always limited by its chemical instability. However, more stable 5-methylfurfural (MF) with similar structure has the potential to replace HMF in many applications. In this work, the method of highly efficient conversion of 6-deoxy sugar to MF catalyzed by various catalysts was proposed in biphasic system. For enhancing MF yield, the effect of catalyst species, temperature (120-170 ℃), organic/aqueous mass ratio (1-5), and reaction temperature on the conversion process of 6-deoxy sugar to MF was systematically investigated. Under optimal conditions, high yield (79 %) of MF was achieved in biphasic system due to MF insolubility favorable for avoiding the MF degradation and condensation. MF with excellent chemical stability has the potential to be a bio-derived platform chemical in green industry.
