PPG has been at the forefront of innovation in electrocoat, an automotive industry standard for improved corrosion performance, for over fifty years. Recently, low temperature cure electrodeposition coatings have emerged as a means to enable the introduction of lightweight substrates, such as aluminum or carbon fiber composites. Additional benefits of this technology include improved sustainability and a reduction in the process footprint for the application of automotive coating stacks. Presented herein are advances in structural attributes and characterization techniques to establish the structure–property relationships in these low temperature cure coatings. The effect of crosslinking chemistry on key properties such as cure response, appearance and mechanical properties will be discussed.
