German industry is currently in a dynamic competitive situation. This also applies in particular to the process and manufacturing industry. In an increasingly globalized market, the medium-term growth rates of recent decades are no longer to be expected. In addition, the traditional core technologies of the two sectors have now reached a degree of maturity that only permits limited rationalization. It is therefore necessary for companies in both sectors to counter this pressure with suitable strategies. One of the key objectives of these strategies is to make operational processes faster, more efficient and more cost-effective. In addition, access to "hidden" capital in the form of employee skills, knowledge and experience creates additional competitive advantages. This is why the problems of expert knowledge (employees) and knowledge transfer and management in the context of smart manufacturing are of great importance. This favours the need to develop suitable information systems.

The presentation develops a comparison between the process and the manufacturing industry according to relevant criteria. This is followed by a critical evaluation of the modelling strategies applied in both industries with regard to the identification, maintenance, distribution, development and collection of implicit and explicit knowledge of employees within the framework of knowledge management. The consistent use of knowledge significantly supports the planning of production and the achievement of stable operating conditions. Thus the costs and the time expenditure for the production of the products are strongly reduced and thus the competitiveness of the enterprise is substantially increased. This is achieved by a high degree of automation. The lecture will conclude with the introduction and proof of a developed information system in the manufacturing industry.
