Supercritical water gasification of shochu residue (distillation residue produced by manufacturer of Japanese distilled liquor) was conducted using a 1 t/d pilot plant. The purpose was to demonstrate the possibility of using supercritical water gasification as heat recovery system from the wet biomass. Another purpose was to operate the plant in daily start and stop manner for duration as long as possible. Conventionally, the reactor got plugged due to the tarry material production during the operation after pressure increase along the reactor. In this study, we employed radical scavenger to avoid tar formation. The amount was determined by the laboratory scale study. Acetic acid was employed as the radical scavenger. Operation at 600 C, 25 MPa was successfully conducted with steam recovery from the reactor. Acetic acid was found to be effective to avoid tarry material production.
