(463b) A Tribute to Professor Rafiqul Gani to Recognize His PSE Contributions over Many Years

Seider, W. - Presenter, University of Pennsylvania
Shortly after a remarkable sabbatical leave at the Denmarks Techniske Hojskole in the
Spring 1983, working with Prof. Michel Michelsen, the young Prof. Rafiqul Gani arrived
on the scene. First, we interacted after I reviewed his paper, “A Generalized Dynamic
Model for Distillation Columns,” one of the first detailed models for startup and
shutdown.” Over the years, our interactions continued, often sharing the specifics of
challenging thermophysical property models – with azeotropes and multiphase equilibria.
Then, thanks to my former doctoral student, Soemantri Widagdo at 3M Co., I became
active in chemical product design, and my interactions with Rafiq turned to product
design research papers and a book chapter. We needed to show how to teach process and
product design side-by-side, and along with Prof. Ka Ng, Rafiq accepted our invitation in
2013 to co-author the 4th Edition of Product and Process Design Principles. This enabled
the continuation of our detailed interactions that began nearly 30 years earlier!
Rafiq, this is to celebrate your many PSE contributions over your outstanding
professional career – and to express my growing appreciation for your interactions,
especially as we add many modern new supplements to the 4th Edition of our textbook.
Happy 65th Birthday, Rafiq!
