(463e) Design and Development of Innovative Chemical Products – What’s Next?

After almost two decades of basic research and the development of materials for teaching, product design has gradually appeared in design courses around the world. One practical way to assess the progress or the impact of product design is to ask the question – how many companies are looking for chemical engineers to work on product design? Alternatively, how many products on the market that are influenced by the newly developed design methods? In this presentation, the presenter will share his experience in merging the design and development of innovative chemical products with the promotion of entrepreneurship in Hong Kong and beyond. The availability of business start-up incubation hubs, makers labs, interdisciplinary collaboration, and so on greatly facilitates the application of the product design concepts captured in the Grand Product Design Model. Examples on the development of solar control films and printable metallic inks are described to illustrate the relevant issues and recent developments.
