Flexible semi-permeable membrane filters which selectively allow moisture transport and block or destroy toxic gases/vapors are of significant interest for protective garments. Adsorptive and reactive nanostructured materials such as metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and metal oxides/hydroxides when incorporated in membranes can create a mixed matrix membrane (MMM) having those types of capabilities. We will report the results of our efforts to incorporate MOFs such as UiO-66-NH2 in a polymeric membrane. We will also report results of barrier performance of such MMMs vis-a-vis toxic gases e.g., ammonia, chlorine from an environment along with our results of moisture vapor transmission rate through such a protection medium.
