(699a) Developing Low-Cost, Efficient, Gasification-Based Modular Energy Systems

Authors

Lyons, D. - Presenter, DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory
This paper provides an overview of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (DOE/NETL) Gasification Program’s work to develop smaller-scale, low-cost, and efficient coal gasification-based energy systems. Research and development is focusing on implementing coal gasification processes into small modular systems having high efficiency for power generation or combined heat and power. These systems would rely on process and/or reaction intensification, innovative oxygen separation technologies with superior performance at smaller scales, and other enabling technologies. Accelerated technological development is possible using NETL’s sophisticated modeling and simulation capabilities; advanced materials and fabrication methods; and by leveraging NETL’s partnerships with industry, academia, and other national laboratories.
