My research interests broadly lie in polymer chemistry research. This includes: (1) using light as a trigger to catalyze the formation and modify the surface of polymers for various applications including dental materials, fuel cell membranes, and self-healing materials. (2) The use of click-chemistry in polymers and hydrogels for facile, rapid and orthogonal synthesis and functionalization of these materials. (3) Applying and developing new dynamic polymers through both associative and dissociative exchange processes. The overall research approach starts from fundamental chemical principles such as small molecule kinetics and monomer synthesis that in turn help improve macromolecular design. A deep understanding of the mechanical properties of these polymers through various rheological and spectroscopic techniques are further essential to improve the materials and target them for their desired application.
Teaching Interests:
My teaching interests lie in developing and improving core chemical engineering and chemistry classes through the use of evidence-based learning and multidisciplinary approaches to teaching through experiential learning. Specifically, I am interested in developing classes that utilize peer instruction, cooperative-based learning and inquiry based chemical engineering labs. Furthermore, my research in materials science, polymer composites for energy and healthcare applications, photochemistry, and dynamic networks has prepared me to teach electives in polymer technology and manufacturing. Finally, I am extremely in developing innovative interdisciplinary electives that combine both the arts and STEM fields through collaborating with professor other departments.
