Cyclohexane is a common chemical used in consumer products, fuels, and as a solvent. It is used in the synthesis of adipic acid, which is a precursor to Nylon 6,6 and it is used in the production of caprolactam. Based upon its industrial relevance, cyclohexane was selected as a representative volatile organic carbon (VOC) with which to investigate the role of metal oxide supports in potassium/manganese (K/Mn) - based catalysts. Mn-based catalysts are interesting catalysts due to their several oxidation states, mobility of oxygen vacancies, and redox properties. Cryptomelane, a K/Mn-based catalyst material, has been shown by others to be an effective VOC oxidation catalyst. In this study, we are investigating K/Mn-based catalysts supported on various metal oxide materials for VOC oxidation. The performance of the catalysts will be investigated and related to their chemical and physical properties.
